History / ಇತಿಹಾಸ

Nagamangala (ನಾಗಮಂಗಲ) is a historic taluk headquarters in the Mandya district of Karnataka, India. The name "Nagamangala" is believed to derive from the Naga (serpent) worship traditions prevalent in the region, combined with "mangala" meaning auspicious, reflecting the area's deep spiritual heritage.

The town has roots going back to the Hoysala Empire period (11th-14th century CE). It was an important administrative centre during the reign of the Hoysala kings, who left a lasting architectural legacy across the region. The nearby Adichunchanagiri Matha, one of the most revered Shaiva monasteries in Karnataka, has played a central role in the spiritual, educational, and cultural life of the region for centuries.

During the Vijayanagara Empire and later under Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan's rule, Nagamangala served as a strategic point due to its location between Mysuru and the northern territories. After the fall of Tipu Sultan in 1799, the region came under British administration as part of the Mysore Kingdom.

Today, Nagamangala is known for its rich agricultural heritage, particularly sugarcane and rice cultivation fed by the Hemavathi and Shimsha river systems. The APMC yard is a vital centre for agricultural trade in the region.

Economy & Agriculture / ಆರ್ಥಿಕತೆ

Nagamangala's economy is primarily agrarian. The taluk is known for cultivation of sugarcane, rice (paddy), ragi, coconut, and areca nut. The Hemavathi Left Bank Canal provides irrigation to large parts of the taluk.

The APMC (Agricultural Produce Market Committee) yard in Nagamangala is a key trading hub for farmers across the taluk, with active market days for rice, ragi, jowar, coconut, and pulses.

Small-scale industries, dairy farming (through KMF/Mandya Milk Union), and the growing service sector around B.G. Nagara's educational institutions also contribute to the local economy.
